Important Information

Legislation in the 2014 General Assembly amended ยง 22.1-253.13:3.C of the Code of Virginia to eliminate the following state-developed SOL tests and replaced them with locally developed alternative assessments:

โ— Grade 3 History,
โ— Grade 3 Science,
โ— United States History to 1865, and
โ— United States History: 1865 to the Present.

In addition to replacing these SOL tests, the legislation also required each
local school board to certify annually that it had provided instruction and
administered an alternative assessment, consistent with Virginia Board of
Education guidelines, to students in grades three through eight in each SOL
subject area in which the SOL assessment was eliminated.

This year, students in grades 3, 5, and 6 will be participating in one or more of these locally developed alternative assessments. During the year, students will be taught the
Standards of Learning content for each of these areas and have access to
quality assessments aligned to the SOLs. These assessments will be
administered as a part of the regular classroom and given at the end of each
quarter. Assessments are scored using a rubric developed from the
Virginia state model rubrics and tailored to our students by our educators.
When the assessments are complete, you and your child will receive their
assessment and the accompanying rubric with the score outlined on it.

If you have any questions or concerns about these assessments, please
