Justo Lamas Concert -A quick
trip to
Abingdon High introduced
twenty-three 8th grade Spanish I students of Glade Spring Middle School
to Argentina. Accompanied by Angela McNutt, GSMS Spanish teacher,
the students attended the concert of Argentina native Justo Lamas on
Monday,
April 14th. They not only listened to him perform but they also
learned
new vocabulary and about the culture of Argentina. Click here

World War II Exploration - For
students in Mrs. Beth Lyons’
class, the study of World War II has been most exciting. In a
special
unit developed by Mrs. Lyons and her student teacher Mary Stringer, the
sixth graders have studied and compared their lives to the past.
Students have brought in various items from their time to compare to
the
early 1900s and the World War II era. Ms. Stringer’s
grandfather,
Rev. Norman Goad visited the class and shared his experiences.

Concert Tour --
Christmas 2002 - It's the last hour before Christmas Break. What
to do? If you're in Mr. Case's Band Class, you'll go on tour - a
concert tour! GSMS Seventh Grade Band students performed an
impromptu
Christmas Concert. Traveling to various classrooms, including the
library, the students played numerous Christmas selections for the
delight

2002) -- As part
of a unit of study of other major countries, Ms. Little's Civics

learned more about everyday life in other countries.

unit
in
class,
they
are
quite
good
at

Fall
2001,
as
part of a unit focusing on the oral
language
tradition of storytelling,
these
students
learned
all
of
the
basic
to
telling
the
tales.
Career Fair -- Eight Grade
students traveled to Abingdon
on November 28th to participate in the Career
Fair at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center.
Students
were able to learn much about various careers that are available in our
area. Many professionals and professional organizations hosted
information
booths. Students could talk to representatives and participate in
many hands-on activities.
The Joy of Giving... -- Demonstrating
the true meaning of Christmas, the students of the Fellowship of
Christian
Athletes (FCA) participated in Operation Christmas Child, the world's
largest
children's Christmas project. Students collected donated toys,
candy,
and other small gifts so children around the world may better enjoy the

Fuel Up to Play 60 Receives Grant
At GSMS, the club Fuel Up to Play
60
has received a grant of $1000. The club
applied for the grant to help in promoting their activities throughout
the
school. Fuel Up to Play 60 is an
in-school program that encourages the availability and consumption of
nutrient-rich foods, along with at least 60 minutes of daily physical
activity.
Mrs. Jill Henderson, a representative of The Southwest United Dairy
Industry Association, presented the $1000 check to club sponsor Mrs.
Belinda
Brannon and members of the Fuel Up to Play 60 club. The club will
use the money to educate
students and staff on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, to promote
healthy
eating habits and to encourage all to be active for at least 60 minutes
a
day.
