  • Math Bee - Spring 2003 - Click here.
  • Justo Lamas Concert -A quick trip to Abingdon High introduced twenty-three 8th grade Spanish I students of Glade Spring Middle School to Argentina.  Accompanied by Angela McNutt, GSMS Spanish teacher, the students attended the concert of Argentina native Justo Lamas on Monday, April 14th.  They not only listened to him perform but they also learned new vocabulary and about the culture of Argentina.  Click here for more pictures.
  • Miss Virginia Teen USA 2003 - Amber Copley - GSMS Sixth Grade students were treated to a special instructor in their recent Life Skills classes:  Miss Amber Copley, Miss Virginia Teen USA.  Teaching a unit on social skills, Miss Copley brought the lesson to life with role playing and discussions.  Click here for more pictures. 
  • World War II Exploration - For students in Mrs. Beth Lyons’ class, the study of World War II has been most exciting.  In a special unit developed by Mrs. Lyons and her student teacher Mary Stringer, the sixth graders have studied and compared their lives to the past.  Students have brought in various items from their time to compare to the early 1900s and the World War II era.  Ms. Stringer’s grandfather, Rev. Norman Goad visited the class and shared his experiences.  Click here for pictures.
  • Band Concert Tour -- Christmas 2002 - It's the last hour before Christmas Break.  What to do?  If you're in Mr. Case's Band Class, you'll go on tour - a concert tour!  GSMS Seventh Grade Band students performed an impromptu Christmas Concert.  Traveling to various classrooms, including the library, the students played numerous Christmas selections for the delight of all.  Click here for more pictures.
  • "Movin' to the message." - GSMS Students were treated to a wonderful assembly featuring comedian Jay Banks.  The focus of his message was building great character and the activities were all fun!  Click here for more pictures.
  • "A Treat for a Job Well Done! - Fall 2002 - GSMS Y.E.S. Students traveled to the Coomes Recreational Center for an afternoon of fun.  Students were rewarded for fulfilling their academic and behavioral contracts.  Click here for more pictures.
  • Ellie Island Experience - Fall 2002 - Sixth grade American History students under the direction of Mrs. Beth Lyons and Mr. Stephen Hansen, a 401 student from Emory & Henry College, recently participated in an Ellis Island simulation.  Click here for pictures

  • In Other Countries, They...(Spring 2002) -- As part of a unit of study of other major countries, Ms. Little's Civics students learned more about everyday life in other countries.
  • Tell Me A Story!  --Mrs. Manuel's 7th graders love to tell stories. Thanks to an exciting unit in class, they are quite good at it!  Fall 2001, as part of a unit focusing on the oral language tradition of storytelling, these students learned all of the basic to telling the tales. 
  • Career Fair -- Eight Grade students traveled to Abingdon on November 28th to participate in the Career Fair at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center.  Students were able to learn much about various careers that are available in our area.  Many professionals and professional organizations hosted information booths.  Students could talk to representatives and participate in many hands-on activities. 
  • The Joy of Giving... -- Demonstrating the true meaning of Christmas, the students of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) participated in Operation Christmas Child, the world's largest children's Christmas project.  Students collected donated toys, candy, and other small gifts so children around the world may better enjoy the holiday season.  Click here to find out more and to see our holiday decorations.
  • Xtreme Assembly -- GSMS Students were treated to an "Xtreme Assembly" featuring the Team Xtreme.  Click here to find out how our very own Bradley S., 8th grader, demonstrated the strength of GSMS!
  • Spirit Week 2001 -- GSMS students & teachers celebrated Homecoming Week in a variety of ways.  Click here for more details and pictures.

  • Metric Madness -- Do you measure up?  Students in Mrs. Hinchey's and Mrs. Martin's class do!  Discovering the excitement of metrics, these students measure everything.  Click here!

Pictures of 1999-2000
  • Mrs. Boyd's Science class  did a unit on coal mining.  To gain hands-on experience, they did some mining of their own.
  • Students from Mrs. Saunders' First Grade Class at Marion Primary School visited their pen pals in Mrs. Manuel's third core class.  The Pen Pals talked about their favorite things, read books, and exchanged yearbooks.
  • GSMS students participated in the Mental Math Bee.  The above are our winners: Kris Collins, sixth grade & school winner, Lou Testerman, seventh grade, and Kyla Hebbard, eighth grade.
  • GSMS students participated in the Hoops for Heart Program raising over $2200 for the  American Heart Association.
  • Read Across America Day - March 2, 2000 -- Students participated in a variety of activities to honor Dr. Seuss's birthday.  Click here for pictures.
  • Christmas Play - December 7, 1999 -- Students performed "Shapin' Up Santa" for our community.  Click here for pictures.

FCA Participates in Day of Action



Emma B. on Daytime Tri-Cities
Emma
Recently Glade Spring Middle School 8th grader Emma B was a guest on Daytime Tri-Cities.  Emma appeared on the morning talk show to discuss the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and healthy eating habits.   Interviewed by hosts Amy Lynn and Morgan King, Emma prepared a delicious and nutritious recipe for a fruit salsa and cinnamon chips that she had learned from her grandmother.  A video clip of the show can be found on the Fuel Up to Play 60 website.

Congratulations to Glade Spring Middle School’s March Students of Character!  These students were selected by their core teachers for the Character of Citizenship.  Sixth graders include Jordan T, Noel C, Amelia T, Claire P, and Eli S.  Seventh graders include Morgan H, Sam C, Emily B, Tiffani T, and Nicolas O.  Eighth graders include Preston H, Jacob S, Cora E, Nathan W, and Aria A.  These students received a certificate of recognition and a free student buffet at Pizza Inn of Abingdon.  Outstanding!

GSMS Fuel Up to Play 60 Receives Grant
2011 Fuel Up to Play 60 Grant
At GSMS, the club Fuel Up to Play 60 has received a grant of $1000.  The club applied for the grant to help in promoting their activities throughout the school.  Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school program that encourages the availability and consumption of nutrient-rich foods, along with at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Mrs. Jill Henderson, a representative of The Southwest United Dairy Industry Association, presented the $1000 check to club sponsor Mrs. Belinda Brannon and members of the Fuel Up to Play 60 club.  The club will use the money to educate students and staff on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, to promote healthy eating habits and to encourage all to be active for at least 60 minutes a day.
